Sharing. Influencing. Raising Awarness
Communicate.
Collaborate. Create.
Sustainable Research Catalonia (SuRe-Cat) network brings together professionals from several research institutes in Catalonia with the common goal to promote change within our institutions and beyond, towards an environmentally sustainable research ecosystem.
Objectives
INFLUENCING
Joining forces to trigger change towards sustainability in the practices from suppliers and distributors.
SHARING
Sharing sustainability good practices, ideas, knowledge, protocols, and policies among institutions, helping each other to increase the sustainability of our research centres and facilities.
RAISING AWARENESS
Raising awareness about the relevance of sustainability in research, and disseminating good practices through events (seminars, courses, etc.), targeting researchers and other relevant stakeholders, such as science managers, policy makers, suppliers, companies, among others.
With the Right objectives, Great Things Can Happen
While science is fundamental to tackling global warming, there is a growing concern about the negative impact of research activities on the environment. Several studies have pointed to research activity as an important polluting sector, especially due to the amount of plastic waste generated and energy consumed. Fortunately, the scientific community is becoming aware of this problem, and several national and European networks have been established to improve good practices in the laboratories to make them more sustainable.
About us
We are a group of professionals, researchers, and research managers, in Catalonia with the common goal of reducing the impact of our scientific activities on the environment.
Belonging to the SuReCat network gives us the opportunity to join forces to promote changes to make great science with a smaller environmental impact, like talking to big companies about packaging and distribution strategies.
–Casandra Villava, EMBL
The fight against climate change concerns us all as a joint effort. I am very happy to be able to create a community with other research institutions to implement the most sustainable practices in our laboratories and make this a priority for all (research performing organizations, industry, funders and policy makers).
–Teresa Sanchis, IBEC
Laboratory research is essential for society, yet it wasn't initially designed with environmental sustainability in mind. We are here to collaborate and embrace innovative solutions, contributing and adapting to a greener future for scientific endeavors.
